Sankofa African-American Theatre Company uses the fundamental skills of theatre performance to develop and strengthen students’ social, academic, and life skills. Sankofa’s PEER2PEER program provides culturally relevant theatre training and education for students 8 years old through High School.  The program is designed to achieve the following goals:

  • Introduce students to theatre techniques that develop students’ skill, knowledge, and confidence in speaking, team building, and problem-solving

  • Increase access to the theatre as performers and critical observers

  • Educate and engage students through the exploration of African American culture, history, and theatrical perspective

  • Create a company of young African-American actors to provide talent and leadership roles in the local theatre community

  • Develop the leadership and artistic skills of the teen peer teachers

The program consists classes that incorporate culturally-based creative dramatics improvisational exercises, culminating in a class of sharing of skills for parents and friends. The classes will include training in movement, voice, and improvisation, and will focus on the individual development of the skills of each student.  The students will develop the content of the final sharing performance.

Sankofa results are evaluated and measured to ensure successful outcomes through:

  • Measuring the development of student skill, knowledge, and experience in theatre through ongoing verbal evaluation and written testing of students and parents

  • Evaluating the performance quality and experience of young actors in area productions

  • Measuring the number of students who complete classes

  • Evaluating the effectiveness of teen peers as teachers and facilitators
